The Archbishop's estate of South Malling was divided into areas "without the wood" and "within the wood". Mayfield was very much in the latter area, producing firewood and building materials. Woodland management continues today.
Archbishop Boniface of Savoy, from one of the great families of Europe, built the first Palace in about 1260 only after the explicit permission of the Pope.
The chapel of Mayfield School was the Great Hall of the Archbishop's Palace. It was built by Archbishop Winchelsey in about 1310 "One of the most spectacular medieval halls of England" - Niklaus Pevsner
The Great Hall was used for banquets and feasting. The archbishop travelled with a large retinue and the people of Mayfield would have been expected to supply the food. Image copyright: Andy Gammon
